Residents and organisations in Uttoxeter are taking part in a nationwide campaign this September to highlight the need for urgent action on climate and nature ahead of COP26, the United Nations Climate talks, later this year in Glasgow.
Taking place between 18-26 September, the climate action campaign known as the Great Big Green Week will see thousands of people across the UK organising local festivals and
events. The campaign aims to draw attention to climate change, destruction of the natural world, while also making a connection with these issues in communities like Uttoxeter, at the same time as showcasing actions to tackle climate change.
BBC Wildlife Presenter, author and TV personality Philippa Forrester will launch the Uttoxeter festivities on Saturday 18th Sept at the Inaugural Gala dinner which is bringing together local decision makers to pledge their support for action in Uttoxeter and the surrounding areas as part of Sustainable Uttoxeter Environment & Climate Commission, a partnership and community-led initiative seeking to achieve net zero carbon in the area by 2030.
Then the week of green-themed activities will continue with wildlife trails, hedgehog workshops, eco-song-writing sessions, craft workshops, green social drinks, clean up days, business panels, climate seminars and two accredited climate literacy training courses. This bumper filled week will then finish off with a bang, with Picnic in the Park being held at Bramshall Road Park on Sunday 25th September. This family event is free to attend and will have a range of stalls, activities, food and drink vendors, games, something for everyone. There will also be an open are cinema at the event showing David Attenborough’s A Life On This Planet, so bring a picnic blanket or fold out chairs and enjoy the show!
The local week is being led by The Globe Foundation with support from lots of local organisations including Staffordshire University, Trent & Dove Housing, Chamber of Commerce, Staffordshire Business Environment Network, Uttoxeter Town Council, East Staffordshire Borough Council, TTTV, East Staffordshire Green Party, Hoglets Wildlife Education and many more.
